Premier Danielle Smith’s intention to pull Alberta out of the national dental care program is taking some heat from the NDP.

Dr. Luanne Metz, the opposition Health Critic, says it’s another example of the Premier “taking on a fight.”

“There’s lots of ways we can disagree with what the federal government is doing, but to create a fight over something that will hurt Albertans does not make any sense. Why should Albertans not have access not have access to the federal dental care program?”

Smith wrote in a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that the Canadian Dental Care Plan infringes on provincial jurisdiction.

Dr. Metz, says many Albertans, including seniors and children, won’t be able to get the dental care they need.

“Even the Alberta Dental Association has written to Smith and expressed concerns that this decision without any further details is just making an already fairly complex program more confusing for both patients and dentists.”

Dr. Metz says this is another example of the UCP “causing chaos” around the health care system.
