The province’s new K-6 draft social studies curriculum is ready to be piloted in schools starting this fall.

Education Minister Demitrios Nicolaides says there are five streams that are part of the content of this new curriculum.

“History, politics, geography, civics and citizenship and economics. All five streams will have some content and be represented in some ways so that students are learning some element of all of those five streams. There’s a strong focus on building Canadian history and building an understanding of global history.”

Nicolaides says there will also be a strong focus on helping students become “active and engaged citizens.”

With the piloting process, Nicolaides says they want to see how the curriculum will work in the classroom.

“A key part of that is to analyze the content load. How much do we have in the new grades? Is that doable? Are there areas where we might need to scale back on the amount of content? Are there areas where we have a little bit more room and we can add a little bit more and expand on some subjects and topics.”

School authorities interested in piloting the curriculum will have to let the province know by May 15.
