Fort Vermilion Shelter in Place Update and Arrests

Update #2 – Fort Vermilion Issue Shelter in place 

Fort Vermilion, Alta. – On May 6, 2024, at approximately 3:20 p.m., Fort Vermilion RCMP received a complaint of shots fired near a residence outside of Fort Vermilion. Initial reports advised that a male had received non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and that the suspects were in a vehicle driving in the Fort Vermilion area. A shelter in place order was issued.

The suspect vehicle was located abandoned a short time later near the Fort Vermilion Rodeo grounds and a firearm was located in the vehicle. Two of the suspects, one male and one female, were arrested near the vehicle. With the help of High Level RCMP and RCMP Police Dog Service, the third male suspect was arrested and taken into custody and the shelter in place order was lifted. RCMP did locate two other firearms incidental to the arrests.

As a result of the investigation, the following people were arrested:

  • Elmer Didzena (28), a resident of Fort Vermilion, was charged with:
    • Attempted murder;
    • Assault with a weapon;
    • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose (X3);
    • Multiple firearm-related offences (x10);
    • Aggravated assault;
    • Assaulting a police officer;
    • Failing to comply with a release order (x3);
    • Uttering threats (x5); and
    • Resisting a police officer (x5).
  • Ryan Auger (37), a resident of South Tall Cree, Alta., was charged with:
    • Attempted murder;
    • Assault with a weapon;
    • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose (X3);
    • Multiple firearm-related offences (x10)
    • Aggravated assault;
    • Assaulting a police officer (x2);
    • Failing to comply with a release order (x3); and
    • Resist a police officer (x3).
  • Cryingwind Didzena (26), a resident of Fort Vermilion, was charged with:
    • Attempted murder;
    • Assault with a weapon;
    • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose (X3);
    • Multiple firearm-related offences (x8); and
    • Aggravated assault.

All three accused were brought before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody. They are to appear at the Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on May 9, 2024.
