Good afternoon,

Council Supports Further Exploration of Nuclear Projects in the Region
Council passed a motion stating, “The Council for the Town of Grimshaw supports nuclear energy development in the Peace Region.” A second motion was passed in support of the formation of a regional committee to continue discussions regarding nuclear development in the Peace Region. The council approved that Mayor Wendy Wald, CAO Brian Allen, and a designate serve as representatives for the Town of Grimshaw.

Tax Rate Bylaw 1212
Council gave three readings and passed Tax Rate Bylaw #1212, which authorizes the different rates of taxation to be levied against assessable property within the Town of Grimshaw for the 2024 taxation year. Tax notices will be prepared and sent out by May 15, 2024.

Seniors Week – June 3-9, 2024
Council declared, in accordance with the Government of Alberta, that June 3-9 be recognized as Seniors Week. Seniors Week has been celebrated since 1986 to recognize the contributions seniors make to enhance the quality of life in Alberta. Stay tuned for information on events provided by the Town of Grimshaw Community Services Department, which provides programming for the Town of Grimshaw, the County of Northern Lights, Village of Berwyn, and the MD of Peace 135.

RCMP Presentation – 2024 Youth Infused Summer
Constable Arthur Sunday provided Council with information regarding the RCMP’s focused initiative, in partnership with neighboring communities and businesses, to connect and engage with youth by supporting the “Peace Regional Youth Infused Summer 2024”. The initiative is in response to input put forth by concerned citizens regarding the need for youth-related events. Constable Sunday reviewed a listing of regional events for youth geared towards children and youth aged 4-20, open to all communities surrounding Peace River. Councillors thanked the RCMP for their support in this important initiative.

Smash the Lot Carnival – Room 27 Youth Centre
Council approved a request from Room 27 Youth Centre to use the south side parking lot by the Room 27 Youth Centre entrance at the Town of Grimshaw Administration Office for their “Smash the Lot Carnival” fundraising event on June 1, 2024, from noon to 4:00 pm. The event is geared toward people aged 12 and up and includes a “smash corner” where attendees can safely smash various objects.

Rural Renewal Stream Program – Lac Cardinal Regional Economic Development
Council approved a request to write a letter of support for the Lac Cardinal Regional Economic Development Board (LCREDB) to become a designated community participating in the Alberta Rural Renewal Stream (RRS) Program. The RRS program addresses current labor needs and skill shortages in rural Alberta communities and helps newcomers settle into the community. The Lac Cardinal Regional Economic Development Board is a partnership between the Town of Grimshaw, the Village of Berwyn, and the Municipal District of Peace #135 formed to nurture an economically strong and diverse region that enhances the quality of life for residents in our communities.

Rural Medical Education Program Open House
Council designated Deputy-Mayor Stacey Messner to attend the Rural Medical Education Program Open House on behalf of Council. Messner also serves as the Board Chair for the Grimshaw Regional Healthcare Attraction and Retention Committee (that serves to attract and retain healthcare professionals to the region) and will bring back information to Council and the GRHARC committee.

Peace Regional Women’s Shelter Update
Peace Regional Women’s Shelter representatives provided Council with an update regarding progress in mitigating and repairing the facility following the discovery of black mold on the second level. In January 2024, the Council approved a $2500 donation to support the shelter repairs. Shelter representatives expressed gratitude to Council for their support.
