Town of High Level receives grant for emergency supplies

The Town of High Level recently received a grant to assist in its efforts to assist others during emergencies.

The Town recently accepted a grant for $65,000 from the Northwest Alberta Foundation as part of its wildfire recovery efforts. The grant will cover costs associated with the Town’s Emergency Sleeping Project.

“This project is vital to our regional emergency assistance efforts,” said Jena Clarke, Director of Community Services. “The equipment we have acquired will ensure we are able to quickly assist large groups of people should they need it.”

The money will recoup costs from the purchase of two sea cans, including their transportation, placement, site preparation, interior lighting and ventilation. It will also cover the cost of a number of storage accessories, including shelving for storage and a vacuum seal system.

The project ensured the creation of a solid foundation for evacuation response during emergencies by creating a facility that can store more than enough basic accommodation
accessories for evacuees.

In the past 10 years, High Level has responded to an abundance of natural disasters. In 2023 alone, the Town welcomed thousands of evacuees from Fox Lake, Rainbow Lake, Chateh, Hay River, Enterprise, Fort Providence, Fort Smith, K’atl’odeeche First Nation, Yellowknife, and others.
