Ignite Youth Centre receives generous support from TELUS Friendly Future Foundation to create a Quiet Corner for neuro-diverse youth.

Fairview, AB, June 18, 2024 – Ignite Youth Centre is thrilled to announce a generous donation of $7000 from TELUS Edmonton and Northern Alberta Community Board and
TELUS Friendly Future Foundation, to allow the creation of a Quiet Corner, a dedicated space designed to provide a sensory break for youth within our centre. This new addition
will offer a refuge of calm, especially for neurodiverse youth who may experience overwhelm in our busy environment.

The Quiet Corner, inspired by the concept of Snoezelen rooms, will be equipped with various sensory tools and equipment designed to create a soothing atmosphere. These
spaces are known for their effectiveness in providing a multi-sensory environment that promotes relaxation, comfort, and a sense of safety. Snoezelen rooms, originally
developed in the Netherlands, are widely used to support individuals with autism, ADHD, sensory processing disorders, and other neurodiverse conditions. They typically feature a combination of lighting effects, gentle sounds, tactile experiences, and soft furnishings to create an immersive experience that can significantly reduce stress and anxiety.

“We are incredibly grateful to TELUS Friendly Future Foundation for their invaluable support,” said Pam MacKay, Executive Director at Ignite Youth Centre. “Their contribution
is critical in allowing us to provide this much-needed sanctuary within our centre. The Quiet Corner will provide a respite for youth, enabling them to manage sensory overload
and regain a sense of calm and focus while also normalizing the use of such tools for self regulation.”

“Through our partnerships with charities supporting youth, we understand the challenges young neurodiverse people can experience in busy environments as well as the important role soothing atmospheres can play for both youth and their families,” said Nimmi Kanji, Executive Director of TELUS Friendly Future Foundation. “We are proud to be able to support Ignite Youth Centre with a Community Board grant that will help them create an inclusive space for the youth they serve.”

The funding provided by the TELUS Edmonton and Northern Alberta Community Board will be used to purchase specialized equipment such as bubble tubes, fiber optic lights, tactile panels, and comfortable seating, all designed to create a peaceful and inviting space. The Quiet Corner will serve as a vital resource for our youth, offering them a safe place to decompress and recharge.

Ignite Youth Centre is committed to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all youth. The Quiet Corner is just one of the many ways we strive to meet the diverse
needs of our community, ensuring that every young person has access to the resources they need to thrive.
