On Monday, April 15th at 2:15 am, the Peace River Municipal Library experienced a break & enter.  Cameras and motion sensors picked up the activity and RCMP were dispatched to the scene.

The individual was a male, at least 6’ tall, and was wearing a black hoodie with a white playboy bunny symbol on the back, a black cap, and white gloves.

The individual did not steal or damage any library materials or the building.  The individual had already left the building by the time RCMP arrived and was not apprehended.  They have not yet been identified.

The individual gained access to the library through the rooftop access point,  an area normally only used by maintenance personnel.  It appears likely that they were able to get onto the roof from a chair placed underneath the exterior rooftop access ladder on a neighboring building.

Once inside, the individual looked around the art gallery then left out the rear door.  Thankfully, the art gallery, which had recently featured local artist Shelli Nixon, had just been emptied days prior.

Footage of the incident and photos from the neighboring building have been shared with RCMP.  The rooftop access has since been secured.  All other interior and exterior doors were locked and alarms were set, as per library procedure.

This incident comes right after the approval of a request to the Town of Peace River for new security cameras to be installed at the library.  The library hopes the new cameras will be installed in the coming weeks.
