Grande Prairie RCMP and Spirit River RCMP lay charges against thieves

Grande Prairie, Alta. – On June 2, 2024, Grande Prairie RCMP responded to a break and enter in progress. Responding RCMP members attended and located a truck fleeing the scene. RCMP members covertly followed the getaway vehicle, which was stolen out of Spirit River, as it was abandoned after attempting to avoid a tire deflation device. With the assistance of Alberta RCMP Police Dog Services (PDS) and members of the public, who called in suspicious activity near their property, Grande Prairie RCMP were able were able to arrest both fleeing suspects and recover multiple stolen tools. Further investigation revealed that the pair had broken into an auction yard in Spirit River the night before and had attempted to steal a vehicle.

As a result of the investigation, the following individuals were arrested:

• Mason Gordon Lane (34), a resident of Manning, Alta., was charged with:
  • Grande Prairie Charges:
    • Possession of stolen property over $5000;
    • Possession of break in tools;
    • Dangerous driving;
    • Resist arrest;
    • Flight from police; and
    • Break and enter.
  • Spirit River Charges:
    • Break and enter;
    • Theft of motor vehicle;
    • Mischief (x3);
    • Fail to comply with order.
• Chelsea Lauren Goddard (30), a resident of Manning, was charged with:
  • Grande Prairie Charges:
    • Possession of stolen property over $5000;
    • Possession of break in tools; and
    • Break and enter.
  • Spirit River Charges:
    • Break and enter;
    • Theft of motor vehicle;
    • Mischief (x3);
    • Fail to comply with order.

Lane and Goddard were brought before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody. Lane is to appear at the Alberta Court of Justice in Grande Prairie on July 8, 2024 while Goddard will appear at the same court on June 24, 2024.
