He’s been the long time President of the Alberta Federation of Labour, now he’s running for the leadership of the Alberta NDP.
Gil McGowan he hopes to get more support for the party from working class and rural Albertans.
“Those are the two demographics that we’re losing to the UCP. That’s troubling to me because the NDP was established as a historic partnership between the old CCF, which was a farmers party, and the Canadian Labour Congress representing workers. Those two demographics that the party was founded to represent are the ones least likely to vote for us right now.”
McGowan says a part of his platform is on energy transition through changes in industrial policy.
“We can save our oil and gas industry in a changing world and we can do it from pivoting from focusing on developing oil and gas for fuels to developing oil and gas for materials. Things like petro-chemicals and new technologies like carbon fibre. Our bitumen resources are particularly well suited for carbon fibre.”
The other main part of McGowan’s platform are on affordability and wage increases.
