Plan Being Developed To Improve Provincial Parks

The provincial government is inviting public feedback on trying to get a new plan in place for improving provincial parks.

Todd Loewen, the Minister of Forestry and Parks, says the development of their new strategic vision is mainly about “keeping up with the times.”

“For campsites for instance, we know the RVs have gotten bigger and more complicated and a little more space is needed and some of our campgrounds were developed probably in the 70’s when things were substantially smaller and less complicated. I think there’s probably more people that are interested in a higher level of services. A lot of people that have moved from camping to glamping and want maybe just a little bit more comfort.”

Loewen says they want to have more tourists staying in Alberta instead of going to other provinces like BC.

He also says they want to try and improve experiences at the parks in the Peace Region and other rural areas.

“There’s always a lot of focus of tourism going into the mountain parks like Kananaskis and things like that and we know that we have some beautiful spaces right here in the Peace Country. We want to make sure that people not only know about them but when they go and visit them, they have a great experience in it so they’ll want to return or encourage other people to come visit us up in the Peace Country.”

Public engagement will run though the summer months with Loewen saying a more formalized plan will be out next spring.
